Abstract
In line with the One Health approach and given the importance at global level of preventing the emergence of zoonotic diseases at source (‘deep prevention’), Belgium joined the international PREZODE initiative (Preventing Zoonotic Disease Emergence) in 2021. The focus of PREZODE's work is on prevention and detection of zoonotic risks in an upstream way in the chain of events, with the aim of anticipating their emergence in a sustainable manner and thus, preventing their potential negative impacts. PREZODE acts in a complementary way to the preparedness for and the response to zoonotic health emergencies. Based on the 2023 recommendations of the Belgian WG PREZODE, the competent ministers invited the WG to continue its work and to explore possibilities for implementation. This memorandum aims to describe priority implementing actions for the prevention of the emergence or re-emergence of zoonotic diseases in selected high-risk activities with a view to them being usefully incorporated into the development of related public policies. The six selected priority activity areas discussed in this report, that can directly contribute to preventing the emergence of zoonotic pathogens and associated diseases in Belgium, or through the role of Belgium on the international scene, are : - International movements - Outdoor tourism and recreational activities - Animal handling - Land use change - Farming - International policy.
